About
Robert W. Mountjoy
Robert Mountjoy was born in Bideford, North Devon, UK. He grew up in Appledore at the confluence of the Taw and Torridge rivers. He attended the local grammar school and trained at St Paul’s, Cheltenham before reading for a degree at Bristol University. In 1972 he took up his first art teaching post in Cheltenham and has since taught in secondary, tertiary and higher education. In 1985 he returned to his native Devon and to a teaching post in Plymouth.
Mountjoy was a driven abstract artist but the relocation required a brief rest from painting. When he ‘returned to the easel’ he turned to figurative work. Subjects were drawn from from landscapes through ‘rural neglect’ to still life. Simple forms in beams of strong light provided inspiration for a long series of still life paintings.
In 2020 he returned to abstract painting, drawing inspiration from a visit to Andalucia in September 2019 (see Gallery 7). An expedition to the Arctic Circle in August 2021 inspired the Finnmark series of drawings and paintings (Gallery 8). He returned to his roots in 2022/3 drawing working waterfronts and is developing a new series of paintings in response (see Gallery 10 ).
Robert Mountjoy has been a fervant supporter of the South West Academy. He was elected an academician in 2003 and served twelve years as a trustee and three years chair. In 2021 he was made an Honorary Academician.
He was elected to the 21 Group in 2021 and became its Chair in 2023.
He became a member of the Plymouth Society of Artists in 2023.
